Version 1.2 Released!


This updated version of New York Zombies has quite a few changes - nothing that you could consider 'major', but the cumulative effect will have a noticeable effect on game play. Most importantly - is should now be more likely that you'll get your character through New York alive!

I've always been aware that this is game is....somewhat brutal. And that's fine - in fact it was designed that way. But I've always known that I wanted to ease the difficulty a little and I've done that in a number of ways, including increasing the items you can gain in certain events, slightly decreasing the HP or damage done by particular enemies and other tweaks such as changing the number of enemies you must kill to increase a trait from 5 to 4.

The other change I'd like to highlight has no effect on gameplay, but I always found the term 'standard zombie' to be somewhat clunky. I've replaced this with the term 'lurker', a suggestion of Cody of Nightbird Games. Thanks Cody! And thanks to all my playtesters - I really appreciate your time and ideas. This game would not be as tight as it is without your efforts!

Key changes in bold:

  • Standard zombies are now referred to as ‘Lurkers’
  • (standard version only) Manhattan Map item – text changed so it can only be used once per location (rather than once per round)
  • How to play – making it clearer that standard zombies never count towards your kill tracker
  • You now only need to defeat four enemies to increase a trait
  • Intro text - Minor grammatical fix
  • Character creation – changed ‘role’ to ‘job’ (to make consistent with character sheet).
  • Facing a challenge - Minor grammatical / layout fixes
  • Jobs – Doctor – rephrasing of special ability to avoid confusion
  • Jobs – Security Guard – rephrasing of special ability to avoid confusion
  • Items – Medkit – added additional effect for Medkit – can now also be used to avoid infection.
  • Fighting - Slight text change– making it clearer that the non-weapon melee attack instructions apply to all situations where you do not have a weapon you can use, and added the amount of damage such an attack does
  • How to play – specified the table as ‘the travel table’ as it is referenced as such in the playthrough document.
  • Harlem – event 4 – you can now take two instead of one item.
  • Harlem – event 6 – added benefit - you now gain +2HP
  • Harlem – combat encounter 2 – decreased enemy HP to 4.
  • Central Park – event 2 – defeat the survivor and also gain a knife.
  • Midtown – combat encounter 1 – number of standard zombies faced slightly reduced from D4 to D4-1
  • Midtown – combat encounter 3 – rephrased ‘aggressive’ trait from ‘attacks twice’ to ‘you must defend twice each round’.
  • Midtown – event 3 – reduced number of zombies in horde from D6+1 to D4+1
  • Lincoln tunnel – combat encounter 1 - rephrased ‘aggressive’ trait from ‘attacks twice’ to ‘you must defend twice each round’.
  •  Lincoln tunnel – event 6 – made optional
  • Character sheet –Note added below stats specifying max value Playthrough document – minor typo fixed
